Fire Extinguisher Inspection, Testing, and Recharging Services

When it comes to fire safety, scheduling regular inspection and testing of your fire extinguishers is a non-negotiable for your business. These portable units are your immediate defense against a fire, and proper service guarantees they’re pressurized and ready to work the moment you need them. Routine monthly customer checks confirm the extinguishers are in the right location and damage-free, while mandated yearly professional inspections and periodic internal maintenance, or hydrostatic testing, ensure the units are structurally sound. Keeping up with this type of service means you can knock down a small fire and stop it from growing into a major crisis. Regular maintenance is also required for your company to meet all legal requirements, which includes immediate recharging after any use.

Benefits of Fire Extinguisher Inspections

The main benefits of regular fire extinguisher inspections are about preparedness, safety, and compliance for your business.

  • Reliable operation in an emergency. Inspections guarantee the extinguisher is fully charged and the internal components are in working order. This ensures that if a fire starts, your extinguisher will function as it should.
  • Life safety and protection. By making sure the equipment is functional, inspections play a direct role in saving lives and protecting people from injury during an incident.
  • Preventing small fires from growing. A properly maintained fire extinguisher allows a person to quickly put out a small fire, preventing it from spreading and turning into a major fire that causes significant damage.
  • Catching minor issues. During an inspection, technicians check for problems like physical damage, corrosion, or tampering. Catching these problems early means they can be fixed before the fire extinguisher is useless.
  • Meeting code and insurance requirements. Inspections are mandated by fire codes, organizations like the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and insurance providers. Regular service ensures your business remains compliant, which is necessary to avoid penalties and keep your insurance coverage valid.

B-Lann Equipment’s Fire Extinguisher Inspection Services

B-Lann Equipment’s certified technicians carefully look over every fire extinguisher during an inspection. This involves checking for visible damage, confirming the correct pressure levels, making sure the unit is accessible, and verifying that the inspection tags are current and accurate.

Monthly customer visual inspections involve quick checks to confirm the fire extinguisher is where it should be, looks undamaged, hasn’t been tampered with, and has a pressure gauge you can clearly read. Annual maintenance inspections are more detailed, including a full examination of the extinguisher’s mechanical components and making sure the tag is labeled with the correct service dates.

Fire Extinguisher Maintenance

Regular fire extinguisher maintenance is essential to make sure they work during an emergency. This maintenance follows a strict schedule that includes specialized services like hydrostatic testing and recharging.

  • Hydrostatic testing. Hydrostatic testing is a required procedure that checks the physical integrity of the cylinder itself. Over time, the internal pressure can weaken the shell of the extinguisher due to corrosion or damage.
    • The cylinder is emptied and filled with water, and then pressurized to a level significantly higher than its normal operating pressure.
    • This test verifies that the cylinder is structurally sound and can safely hold the pressure needed to operate.
    • The required frequency of this test depends on the type of extinguisher, but most common types require this test every 5 or 12 years.
  • Recharging. A fire extinguisher must be immediately recharged after any use, regardless of how short that use was. A partially discharged extinguisher may not have enough pressure to operate a second time.
    • Recharging is needed after any use, or when the pressure gauge indicates the pressure has dropped below the operating range.
    • A certified technician carefully empties the cylinder, replaces the extinguishing agent, and re-pressurizes the unit according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Record keeping. Detailed record keeping is a mandatory and important part of fire extinguisher maintenance.
    • An inspection tag must be securely fastened to each extinguisher. The certified technician signs, dates, and punches a hole in the tag to indicate the last annual maintenance date.
    • Businesses must maintain separate records showing the date of all maintenance performed, including the results of annual inspection, hydrostatic tests, and any repairs or recharges. These records demonstrate compliance with local fire codes and NFPA standards (specifically NFPA 10).
    • The date of the last hydrostatic test must be permanently marked on the extinguisher cylinder itself.
